The complete trek is a 5 day 4 night heavy-duty hike that begins in the Cayambe-Coca Reserve at Papallacta before heading into the Antisana Reserve until it reaches Cotopaxi National Park. The highest altitude of the trek is 4,500m / 14,763ft (the base of Volcano Sinc holagua) in Ecuador’s stunning paramo as it passes the Antisana and Cotopaxi mountains.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Quito – Laguna del Volcan Camp (12,464ft/3.800m).

Day 2: Laguna del Volcan Camp – Santa Lucia Camp (14,104ft/4300m)

Day 3: Campo Santa Lucia – Quito (9,184ft/2.800m)

Detailed Program


Day 1: Quito – Laguna del Volcan Camp (12,464ft/3.800m).
We will leave from Quito in the morning and drive eastern up towards El Tambo Village (11,152ft/3.400m). There will be packhorses awaiting us. After loading our equipment on the horses, we´ll start moving on the trail. We will be hiking most of the time on very muddy areas, crossing stream and rivers, rubber boots are more than necessary, after 4 to 5 hours we will get to our first campsite, which is located close to a nice lake, called “Laguna del Volcan” (12,464ft/3.800m). Overnight in tents (BL/D)

Day 2: Laguna del Volcan Camp – Santa Lucia Camp (14,104ft/4300m)
After breakfast, we will start hiking up through muddy areas and small forests until we reach higher and drier paramo zones. That will take us about 3 hours. Once here, we still have to hike for another 3 hours admiring the magnificent and massive Antisana glacier and Santa Lucia Lake. We will get at our second camp located in a sheltered valley. Overnight in tents (B/BL/D)

Day 3: Campo Santa Lucia – Quito (9,184ft/2.800m)
It starts early in the morning, the Trek passes through an area of a set at the Base of Antisana, with a beautiful view of the glacier and then a moderate climb to reach the lagoon Mica where we have a great view and we enjoy the beautiful scenery. Which will take us between 6 and 7 hours, at this stage of Trek’s best chance to observe deer, llamas, Andean Condor, and other features of the moors birds shall be taken, and in the evening after enjoying one of the best experiences of his life, the car will be ready to return to Quito.
